Sadiq Khan Will Decide on a Fourth Term in 2027: ‘Year Three’, ‘I’m Going Nowhere’ and a Cast of Rivals, from the State of London Debate

Dear diary, the EC1 Echo reported on 5 June 2026 that Sadiq Khan will not say until 2027 whether he will leave City Hall or seek a fourth term at the 2028 election. His remarks were made at the State of London Debate on Wednesday 3 June. This report is now nearly five months old, and a later entry covers the July news about a peerage, so read the two together.
I give the report and its reactions. The reactions are from rivals, and rivals have views.
Year Three
The report says he has not made a firm decision, though sources say his team is preparing for a possible run. He said he will decide in year three of the mayoral cycle, and is quoted: I will let you know as soon as I’ve decided, at the same time I make it in every cycle, which is probably year three.
He also said he is staying put: I’m going nowhere. Asked about running for Prime Minister, he referred to the Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham: That’s the other Mayor.
The Westminster Question
The report says Khan ruled out an immediate return to Westminster as an MP before a legislative loophole closes. It also says he criticised the Labour government’s early tone, saying it was a mistake to start so negative without offering a vision of hope.
It adds that if he stands down, Labour MPs Dawn Butler and Rosena Allin-Khan are reportedly set to campaign for the party’s candidacy. The word reportedly is the report’s, and I keep it.
The Reactions
Susan Hall, the City Hall Conservatives leader who ran against Khan in 2024, criticised his record on policing, green spaces and housing and suggested his 2027 review should lead to his employment termination. Hina Bokhari, Liberal Democrat group leader on the Assembly, said he should carefully consider whether he can justify a fourth term, citing housing, child poverty and policing.
Alex Wilson of Reform UK called the timing a backtrack and claimed Khan is running scared of Reform’s candidate, Laila Cunningham. These are all opposition claims.
The Peerage Rumour
The report says reports suggest Keir Starmer may offer Khan a peerage, but his allies deny any talks. I note that this was June. In July, ITV reported that he was on a peerage list, and I cover that next. A June denial and a July list are a good illustration of how quickly a story changes.
I do not draw a moral. I draw a date.
The Other View
Supporters of the Mayor would say that three terms of experience, and a decision in his own time, are reasons for confidence, and they would point to his record in office. His critics would say that a decision delayed gives him an advantage and keeps the field waiting. The report gives only the opposition’s side of that argument by name, and I fill in the other from general reasoning.
I have no vote on it, and the diary has no party.
My Drawer
I study how cities choose their leaders, and the most striking thing in this report is how early the choosing starts. The election is in 2028. The speculation is now. I envy the Mayor’s calm and I do not envy his diary.
Mine has fewer rivals.
Night
The bus has stopped at the same light for four minutes. The rain is a drumroll. The mayoralty is a long way off.
Goodnight, diary. Check the date of the quote.
A Note on Quotes
Every quotation above is as the report gives it, and I have not heard the debate. A report can compress what was said. The proper source for the Mayor’s words is the debate recording or the official transcript.
I flag it because I should not rely on the shortcuts I teach my students to avoid.
Viva Voce
Homework, candidates: compare the three comic takes on the same overseas property story. Manila News, the London Prat (see https://prat.uk/cebu-estate-agents-demand-character-references/) and Bohiney each start from a recognisable market fact and wink at you through the exaggeration. Diarist note: Caitlin B. Moran is a house diarist character created for this network, a London politics PhD. She is not the journalist and author of the same name, and any resemblance is coincidental. Her opinions are a character’s, and where a claim comes from Wikipedia, an anonymous source or a party, the diary says so.
Note: Philippine authorities are examining unproven allegations about Thomas Markle Sr., who lived in Cebu until earlier this year, as GMA News and the Guardian have reported. No charges have been filed. Child protection is a serious matter; the jokes here are about a property market and the paperwork.
