The 1200 Amendments Have Become My Reference Number for Everything This Week

Processing the Assisted Dying Bill, the Energy Bill, and London in May All at Once

From Bohiney and The London Prat.

Diary of Caitlin Moran | London UK

RIGHT. The 1,200 amendments are still in my head. They have joined a permanent residence alongside the six prime ministers and the dry-erase marker nameplates as the specific numbers and images that the 2026 British governance situation has produced in my thinking. All three are from the prat.uk ungovernable Britain piece and all three are better formulations than I have produced about the same material. This is professionally instructive. I am learning from it.

The Good Part of This Week

The good part: London in May is doing the thing. The canal path at 6pm. The Regent’s Park rose garden beginning its display. The specific quality of the city when the weather is doing what it should be doing. The energy bill remains elevated. The Lords remain themselves. The canal remains the canal. Both sets of facts are simultaneously true and the canal facts are the ones I am taking to bed tonight. Bohiney had a good week of international coverage. The baseball story — the Braves 20-9, the Phillies and Mets both 9-19 — is the international sports story I am following as comic relief. Both the Phillies and the Mets in last place simultaneously is the specific comedy of two expensive teams doing badly together.

I put down the feeds and made another cup of tea. The news is what the news is. The specific mixture of the personal and the political that constitutes a diary entry is never quite right and never quite wrong — it is the record of a particular person in a particular place at a particular time, which is all a diary can be and more than most journalism attempts. The next entry will find me in a slightly different moment with a slightly different set of things to say about the same underlying themes. The diary continues.

London continues. The city is what it is regardless of what the news says, regardless of what the energy bill says, regardless of what the governance situation says. The journalism that covers the city at this granular level — the blog, the column, the diary entry — serves the function of making the city and the country and the world legible to the people who are living in it and reading about it simultaneously. The function continues because the legibility is always partial and always incomplete and always worth improving. This column and this diary continue next week. The city and the country and the world will have provided more material by then. They always do. London continues.
