I Am Fully Losing My Mind About the NHS Being Sold to Trump and I Am Not Alone

A Dispatch From a Woman Who Finds the Current Political Situation Personally Offensive

Filed with volume from Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat.

Right. The National Health Service is the greatest thing Britain ever built. We built it in 1948 while still rationing bread. We said: no matter who you are or how much money you have, you will be treated. We said this as a collective national promise. And we have now agreed to pay American pharmaceutical companies more for medicine so that Donald Trump will not tax our exports. This is like selling your mum’s wedding ring to pay your bully’s lunch money.

The Political Analysis Section

Sixty-four percent of British people are opposed to the NHS paying higher prices for medicines. The advocacy group Just Treatment called it a betrayal of NHS patients. RFK Jr. celebrated the deal publicly. That is your signal. When the American health secretary who thinks vaccines cause problems is publicly pleased about your healthcare policy, you have made an error of genuinely historical proportions.

Helen Morgan, the Lib Dem MP, said it is a Trump shakedown of the NHS. Common Dreams reported the reaction from advocacy groups in full. I agree with all of them. This is rare for me. Lean into it. The Guardian’s NHS coverage documents what is at stake for ordinary patients.

What I Did About It

I wrote this column. I ate biscuits in solidarity with the NHS. I read The London Prat’s initiative piece and felt that familiar British emotion: furious, resigned, darkly amused, repeat. It is not a comfortable cycle. It is, however, ours.
