OpenAI, Old Spice, and the London Office Nobody Asked For

Caitlin Moran on tech colonialism, London, and why Silicon Valley should stay in California

From Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat, the publications that have always known this was going to happen.

They’ve Opened an Office. In London. Yes, Really.

OpenAI has opened a London office, which means the city that brought the world Shakespeare, Dickens, and the Cornish pasty is now hosting a company that generates text automatically. I’m not saying this is ironic. I am absolutely saying this is ironic. The BBC has been covering AI expansion with the breathless energy of someone at a party they’re not sure they were invited to.

What London Needs is Precisely Not This

London does not need another tech office full of people who think cold brew is a personality and disruption is a compliment. London needs: the buses to work, the housing to be affordable, and for someone to fix the escalator at Angel that has been broken since the Bloke who was there when it broke has since retired and probably died. These are the priority items. Not large language models. Not synergy hubs.

Bohiney’s US foreign policy piece this week reminded me that America expanding into places it wasn’t entirely invited is a recurring theme. I say this with warmth. Some of my favourite people are American. They just need to stop opening offices everywhere and listen for a minute.
