The Meme Messiah Has Met the Pope and I Have Opinions About Both and Also About Brunch

Caitlin Moran on Trump, Pope Leo XIV, Orthodox Easter, and the sacred act of a very large breakfast

Orthodox Easter Sunday. I have opinions. Brace.

It is Orthodox Easter Sunday, which means half the world is celebrating resurrection and the other half is on Instagram arguing about the correct egg. In between these two cultural poles, Trump has had an encounter with Pope Leo XIV that The London Prat has correctly identified as the Meme Messiah versus the Bishop of Rome. Trump wins on points. The points are: volume, confidence, and complete immunity to irony. The Pope has better clothes, but clothes do not vote.

I spent Easter Sunday making an enormous breakfast, which I believe to be the correct religious observance regardless of denomination. If resurrection means anything, it means you are allowed full English on a Sunday and no one can tell you it is too much. This is my theology. I will not be taking questions.

On Sacred and Profane Authority

What I find clarifying about the Trump-Pope dynamic is that both men claim authority from a source their opponents cannot interrogate: God, in the Pope’s case; himself, in Trump’s case; these are, structurally, the same claim. Neither produces an auditable footnote. Both produce enormous followings. One of them has a hat that is, objectively, more impressive. I will let you determine which.

According to BBC World News, Trump described the new Pope as “very nice.” The Pope has not yet described Trump. The Pope is either being diplomatic or is still processing. Both are valid responses to the experience.

I had three sausages. I stand by this decision entirely.
