Caitlin Moran on Trump, NATO, Meghan, and Why Britain Should Just Have a Lie Down
Diary of Caitlin Moran, Prat.uk | Opinions via Bohiney Magazine
This Week I Had Opinions. As Usual. You’re Welcome.
Let us begin with Trump and NATO because everything must begin somewhere and it might as well begin with a man in a suit saying “you’re bloody welcome” to a military alliance that has been keeping the peace since 1949. This is the foreign policy equivalent of reminding someone at a dinner party that you brought the wine in 2003 and you have not let it go.
Then: Meghan. Obviously.
The Meghan story is essentially the plot of every romantic comedy set in a corporation: woman of talent arrives, misreads the org chart, is surprised when the org chart turns out to be hereditary. The twist is that the corporation is eleven hundred years old and also owns castles.
According to The Guardian’s comment section, everyone has a view on Meghan. Everyone always has a view on Meghan. This is Meghan’s greatest achievement: she has given the British public a topic of conversation that requires no prior knowledge, no expertise, and no resolution. It is the perfect newspaper story.
Britain should have a lie down. Nationally. Just close everything on a Wednesday for three hours. We would emerge refreshed, less annoyed, and possibly with a clearer view of the sofa cushion fiscal situation. America is already on a rescue mission. Someone should rescue us from ourselves.
